When you migrate to the cloud, the first concern is to get your workloads functional. Optimization and server “right-sizing” typically a low priority and you end up with a large portion of your servers over-provisioned which results wasted money! There are several companies that charge for cloud optimization, but typically these features only provide reports and lists without any method of taking action right away to save cost. The new “Spotinst Optimizer” takes a completely new approach with an easy to use interface that makes it simple to take action! We provide you with a deck of instance “cards” that you can go over one by one. Each card allows you to take action right away like resize or terminate.
Let’s take a look below.
From the Spotinst console, click on the “Optimizer” tab:
From the Optimizer, you will see several “cards” with details about individual instances that are underutilized. You will also see details about the instance like the instance ID, region and availability zone, as well as the OS and application running.
As you can see, this particular instance is currently only utilizing an average of 6% CPU. Let’s click “Resize” to change this instance to a smaller EC2 instance type.
It’s simple to resize an existing instance. From the drop down, select the new instance type and click resize (this will force a restart).
After a few minutes, you will find you new instance launched in your EC2 console in the new size.
Wrap Up
And that’s it! You can see how easy it is to resize instances with this new feature. Simply go through the individual cards on the screen and your environment will be Optimized in no time! You can also snooze individual cards for a week if you prefer not to take action right away. Underutilized instance cards are just the beginning for this new feature. In the coming months, we will have additional functionality with ELB, EBS, and Elastic IP. This feature is completely free and available to our customers today!
